A man died this evening, around 12 hours after he was stabbed by muggers in Dhaka's Moghbazar area.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Habibullah, 18, an employee of a cloth shop in old Dhaka's Islampur area. The youth used to live in Moghbazar.
According to police, the incident happened around 5:45am when the victim was walking towards his residence while returning from his ancestral home in Mymensingh, where he went for a couple of days.
"Some muggers intercepted him and stabbed him in the head, leaving him critically injured," said Md Razu, officer-in-charge of Hatirjheel Police Station.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he breathed his last around 6:00pm, the OC said.
The police official said they are collecting CCTV footage of the nearby areas and trying to arrest the killers.
Sohel Rana, a relative of the victim, said the muggers took away his mobile phone.
The body was sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
A man was killed after being beaten by a group of people on suspicion of being a mugger in Dhaka's Gulistan area this evening.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 30, could not be known immediately.
The murder took place around 7:30pm in front of the Sundarban Square Super Market.
Sub-Inspector Subrata Paul of Paltan Police Station said that the public, including pedestrians and vendors, caught a man they suspected of attempting a mugging and beat him up.
Police from the nearby Ahad Police Box rescued him and transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 9:30pm, the SI said.
The deceased was wearing a jeans pant and a long-sleeve t-shirt at the time of the incident. Efforts are underway to identify the man, the police official said.
